Following a catastrophic vehicle accident that put Anne Heche in a coma, she was "not expected to survive."

Anne Heche is "not expected to survive" after sustaining a "serious anoxic brain injury" in a car accident last week, according to a statement Heche's publicist provided to USA TODAY on Thursday.

  • The 53-year-old star is still very ill and in a coma. The statement reads, "It has always been her wish to donate her organs and she is being maintained on life support to see if any are viable."
  • In a statement, the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills Hospital in Los Angeles is thanked for its "committed team and amazing nurses that cared for Anne."
  • The statement reads, "Anne had a big heart and impacted everyone she encountered with her kind nature. More than her exceptional talent, she considered it her life's purpose to inspire kindness and joy, especially by promoting acceptance of who you love.
  • The statement concludes, "She will be remembered for her fearless honesty and sorely missed for her light."
  • Heche crashed into a Los Angeles home, leaving her with critical injuries, and police claimed earlier on Thursday that they were looking into whether or not she was driving while under the influence of drugs.

  • According to LAPD spokesman Officer Jeff Lee, detectives with a search warrant collected a sample of Heche's blood and discovered drugs in her system. But in order to distinguish the medications from any that she may have received for treatment at the hospital, where she remained Thursday, six days after the crash, toxicology tests, which might take weeks to complete, must be carried out.
  • This most recent development happened when Office Annie Hernandez revealed to USA TODAY on Monday that the LAPD had issued a warrant on Friday to do a toxicology blood test on Heche.
  • Police said on Thursday that they were still compiling evidence from the collision and that, if necessary, they would bring a case to prosecutors after the investigation was finished.
  • Heche's representative declined to respond to questions about the probe from The Associated Press.
