A year after being charged with domestic abuse, Braves player Marcell Ozuna was detained on suspicion of drunk driving.

According to Gwinnett (Georgia) County records, Marcell Ozuna, who missed the Atlanta Braves' run to the 2021 World Series championship after being placed on administrative leave due to a domestic-violence incident, was pulled over early on Friday morning for drunk driving.

Police in Norcross detained 31-year-old Ozuna for driving while intoxicated and making an improper lane change. At 4:39 in the morning, he was taken into custody and freed shortly after 8 in the morning after posting bond.

  • Following his arrest in May 2021 and following charges of battery and aggravated assault by strangulation when police were called to his Sandy Springs, Georgia home, Ozuna consented to enrol in a pretrial diversion programme. Ozuna seemed to hold his wife's neck when they arrived at his house, according to police body cam footage that TMZ was able to obtain.
  • He missed the rest of the 2021 campaign, and Major League Baseball retrospectively punished him for 20 games without pay. A 24-week family violence intervention programme, anger management, and 100 hours of community service were all requirements of Ozuna's pretrial release agreement, along with three to six months of supervision.
  • While MLB does not anticipate any further disciplinary punishment against Ozuna, the conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the MLB Players' Association mandate that any player arrested or accused of DUI be submitted to a joint treatment board for assessment.
  • An inquiry for comments was not immediately answered by the Braves.
  • The Braves signed Ozuna prior to the 2020 season to a four-year, $65 million contract. He is now in the second year of that deal. Before the July trade deadline, the Braves added three outfielders in response to his arrest from the previous season and other injuries, and they went on to win the World Series.
  • As the team's main designated hitter this year, Ozuna has batted.214 with 20 home runs.
